5 Foods to Improve Your Sex Life
Posted by Lexi Abner on Jan 10, 2022
As men (in particular) reach a certain age, they’re often looking for ways to improve their sexual drive and health.
And guess what?
Because sexuality is intricately linked to physical and psychological health, there are definitely foods you can eat to improve your sex life.
First off, you can forget about superstitious, unproven remedies like rhino’s horn, or tiger’s penis. The best place for a rhino’s horn is on top of the head of the rhino, and the tiger’s penis is going to work wonders for the tiger, but not your sex life.
But there’s science around that suggests a nutritious diet can be good for your sex life by improving these specific areas: blood flow and heart health, stamina and libido. That means choosing a diet packed with vegetables and lean proteins—and minimizing sugar and saturated fat.
We’ve chosen just a few foods to get your blood (and other things) flowing.
Libido, Sex Drive & Oysters
Sure, you’ve heard about the aphrodisiac properties of oysters. A big cliché, right?
Well, maybe not. Like many clichés, there’s often some truth hiding there. You see oysters are high in zinc, and zinc increases blood flow… can you see where this is going? Yep, an increase in blood flow to the sexual organs.
Not only that, Zinc assists in regulating testosterone levels, which is pretty important to the fertility of all the blokes out there. Zinc deficiency, on the other hand, has been shown to have a negative effect on testosterone level.
Yeah, you can get zinc elsewhere too. However, oysters contain more zinc than any other food. Period.
Nuts & Seeds & Your Sex Life
Perhaps a bit less exciting, but good for any shy of shellfish, nuts and seeds, particularly cashews and almonds are also packed with zinc, and you know what that means. Munching on these high-zinc nuts and seeds may improve your blood flow, hormone levels and kick-start your sex drive.
Rich in omega-3, walnuts provide extra bang for your buck.
Certain foods make more of an impact on vein health than others—and nuts and seeds are among the best
Apples & Your Sex Life
The simple apple contains a natural pigment called quercetin. It’s an antioxidant, a type of flavonoid, that plays a role in promoting circulation, and assists in reducing erectile dysfunction.
Research has shown that at doses greater than 500 mg per day, quercetin can assist in lowering blood pressure. High blood pressure can, of course, lead to sexual dysfunction due to the impairment of blood flow to the sexual organs.
Similarly, in women, high blood pressure has been shown to reduce libido because it causes fatigue, and lower blood flow to the vagina can impact sexual response.
Eat an apple (or 3) a day.
Salmon & Your Sex Life
Fatty fish like salmon are well known for being big in omega-3 fatty acids, which is good for the cardiovascular system, and in particular heart health.
According to many trusted studies, omega-3s can help stop plaque building up in arteries, so again you benefit from healthy blood flow throughout your body.
A healthy heart and circulatory system reduces the likelihood of illness like heart disease, which very definitely impairs sexual function.
Forget fish and chips, try fatty fish.
Red Wine & Your Sex Life
Okay sure, drinking bottle of wine after bottle of wine will put you on the floor and lead to you being about as sexually dysfunctional as you can get. But in moderation, red wine is another one of those strange but true myths, backed up by many studies.
Although the source of the benefits is not well understood, red wine (like apples), contains quercetin.
In 2009, a study was conducted with 798 women that confirmed regular, moderate red wine drinking could be linked to greater sexual desire, lubrication, and sexual function.Other types of alcohol failed to produce similar results.
Blue Pill Or Diet Change?
These foods also form a part of the famous Mediterranean diet, which comprises whole grains, healthy fats, a variety of fruits and vegetables, and is relatively low in dairy products and red meat.
Research has previously established this diet’s contribution to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and a recent study also found this diet can help sexual function, improve blood circulation in general, and more specifically for the penis.
"In our study we found that the Mediterranean diet was associated with better physical agility, healthier arteries and better blood flow, higher testosterone levels and better erectile function," said researcher Anatcius Englis.
So if you’ve ever experienced problems from high blood pressure to impotence, the Mediterranean diet may be worth checking out. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables and cutting back on red meat sure won’t do you (or the planet) any harm.
