What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common STI, especially if you are young and don’t use condoms. The most recent statistics available are from 2007, when there were 52,000 cases of chlamydia recorded in Australia. 80% of those cases happened to people who were between 15 and 29 years of age.

Worse yet: the actual number is much higher. Why? Most people who get chlamydia don’t even know they are infected. If they don’t routinely get tested, they never find out.

While men are usually asymptomatic, chlamydia can severely damage a woman’s reproductive system. If undetected and not taken care of, it can even make it more difficult for a woman to have children.

Are there Any Symptoms?

While a lot of people never know they have chlamydia, some do get symptoms. Women may have a burning sensation when they urinate or an abnormal vaginal discharge. Men may also experience burning or discharge. While it doesn’t happen often, they can also get swelling in one or both testicles.

How is it Spread?

Chlamydia can be spread by vaginal, anal or oral sex. Males can spread chlamydia without ejaculating. There are only two sure ways to avoid chlamydia. You can either have a long-term monogamous relationship with someone where both partners test negative. Or, you can get in the habit of using a condom every time you have sex.

Who is at Risk?

It’s science, but it isn’t rocket science. If you have unprotected sex, you are at risk. The more you have sex and the more partners you have, the more you are at risk.

How Do I Avoid Chlamydia?

The best way to avoid chlamydia, other than not having sex, is to always use a reliable condom. Check out our site for the best condoms in Australia. Better safe than sorry.
