They don’t use condoms in gay porn, so why should I?

It’s a common response. A condom study published in the journal PLoS ONE back in 2015 found men who watched pornography that depicted condom use were much more likely to use condoms themselves.

"Actually, one type of pornography was associated with higher rates of condom use — men who viewed more pornography containing condom use engaged in fewer condom-less anal sex encounters. Even those who took part in compulsive pornography viewing were not more likely to engage in condom-less anal sex," said Eric Schrimshaw, study author and associate professor at Columbia University.

Why Isn’t Condom Use More Prevalent?

Well, thanks to (adult) movie magic, maybe good quality condoms are being used and you simply don’t notice.

Back in the not too distant past gay adult films seldom had condom-less sex scenes because it was considered irresponsible. The consensus was that viewers, influenced by the film’s performers, may go out and worsen the HIV situation.

Nowadays, condom-less scenes are the norm. When someone bothered to do a count back in 2018, there were thirty-four bareback studios compared to only four condom-only studios — a one-to-seventeen ratio. Today it’s even lower with GayHoopla and GayRoom the only remaining condom-only production houses in the mainstream gay adult video industry.

Why? Well, it’s not just because of PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis)—like most things it’s down to cash. The perception is that condom-less scenes sell better and as it’s all big business. Profit motivated most studios to go latex-free.

Not Everything You See Is Real

But thanks to movie magic many condom-less scenes are today shot with condoms. Many scenes include a mix…. Not that you’d know. In a recent interview veteran gay adult director Mr. Pam (who’s a woman) revealed that studios still secretly use condoms in scenes.

“Sometimes we use moodier lighting to conceal the condom,” she said. “There’s some things you can’t do, like pulling out the (wang)... it will be obvious they are wearing a condom.”

It’s pretty common to shoot all the condom-less foreplay scenes early in the day according to Mr. Pam. Then there’s often a break for marketing photos, and such. When everyone reconvenes to shoot the penetration scenes, it’s time for the condom to go on.

As always, it’s worth pointing out that condom use isn’t just to protect against that risk of HIV, there are a whole host of STIs out there which may not be life-threatening, but are at best inconvenient and at worst painful—and the faithful condom is still your best first line of defence.
