Health authorities in Cairns have reported a rise in syphilis and gonorrhoea cases this year. According to figures reported on 10 September, the region has recorded 103 syphilis cases and 501 gonorrhoea cases so far in 2026; around twice the number reported at the same point last year.
The figures are a reminder of something worth knowing wherever you live: condoms and regular STI testing work together. Condoms help reduce the risk of many sexually transmissible infections, but they cannot remove every risk. And because an STI may not cause noticeable symptoms, feeling well isn’t always a reliable way to know.
If you’re sexually active, consider whether it’s time for a check-up, particularly if you have a new partner, multiple partners, or a concern about possible exposure. Looking after your sexual health doesn’t need to be complicated or embarrassing. Having protection available, using it consistently and getting tested when appropriate are practical steps we can all take.
